Weekly Mix #237 - "About 99% of the time, the right time is right now"

Nike, Life Advice, Pandemic Home Design & Working Remote

Happy Monday!

The last couple weeks have been the finish to a quarter at work, and I've been finishing off a bunch of things I had on the go (both work-related and otherwise).

One of the things which always surprises me is how much can happen in a short period of time.

Learning, progress, work, fitness—we can all accomplish a lot in a short amount of time: a quarter, six months, a year.

The thing is: it rarely feels like progress at the time.

You may not feel like you're accomplishing much day-to-day, or even week-to-week, or month-to-month.

But when you look back, you realize you've progressed a lot.

The key to seeing that progress is making sure you're moving forward a little bit each day.

Over time, that adds up.

From one of this week's articles: "About 99% of the time, the right time is right now."

Trust the process, and make a little progress every day.

Have a great week.

📚 Book Notes: Shoe Dog - Phil Knight - The story of Nike as told by cofounder Phil Knight did not disappoint. Knight shares the founding story, along with all the hardships and compromises along the way. An entertaining read for anyone interested in Nike or business, but particularly useful for entrepreneurs (or would-be entrepreneurs).

📖 103 Bits of Advice I Wish I Had Known - Kevin Kelly - The always-wise Kevin Kelly with another birthday roundup of life advice. All kinds of good ones in there. A few of my favourites:

"About 99% of the time, the right time is right now."

"You are as big as the things that make you angry."

"Don't bother fighting the old; just build the new."

"Half the skill of being educated is learning what you can ignore."

📖 How the pandemic is changing home design - Jennifer Kingston - Axios - Many of these won't be surprising, but I love this as an example of the second-order effects of big events like the pandemic, which we often don't think about. Side note: I do want a golf simulator in/near my future home.

📖 Airbnb tells employees they can work remotely forever - AngelList/NYT - Noteworthy because CEO Brian Chesky had previously said they would return to the office. At this point, I think many companies who want to attract high-performers will struggle to go back to requiring them to be in an office; there's simply too many options available for full remote work. And there are a lot of employees—often those growing families—who would prefer to live somewhere cheaper and quieter than the middle of big cities.
