The Bias Affecting Your Thinking Every Day, Subtraction, Jay Z, Wealth & Writing
Happy Wednesday !
I had a friend in town and hosted a party over the weekend, so didn't get as much reading done as usual. I hope you all survived Black Friday/Cyber Monday week, and enjoyed Thanksgiving if you're in the US!
That said, here's what I've been working on and exploring this week:
Blog Post I Wrote: What is Confirmation Bias?
The first of my more detailed posts on specific cognitive biases. This bias affects our thinking every day. It's one of the big contributors to the partisanship and conflict we in society today.
Articles I'm Reading:
Subtract - Derek Sivers - It seems appropriate timing following Black Friday/Cyber Monday week to remind ourselves that less is often more. I'm a big fan of Derek in general, and recommend his book (note the reason for my rating).
8 days in Europe trip report - Olivier Savoie - On that note, here's a post (and a cool subreddit) about the items taken on a trip through Europe for 8 days using just one bag. He's also got one of my favorite Instagram accounts.
Artifox - I didn't really buy anything personally during Black Friday week, but I did discover some new brands. This one makes some great minimalist furniture.
Jay Z is back on Spotify - For those Spotify users and Jay Z fans, he's back today after two years off the platform.
Different generations' share of US wealth over time - This visual takes a bit of time to interpret, but the whole thread has some interesting data on how wealth share has been changing, and speculation on the reasons why.
The first million words are the hardest - A thread about writing advice, which basically comes down to: write a lot.
Bungalow - I stumbled upon this company this week, which is creating "move-in ready homes and a built-in community" in various cities. I find this concept (much like WeLive) interesting, and have been thinking about similar ideas outside cities. In other words, how can we enhance the living experience by planning a little more effectively who and where we live with, and the priority of certain home items and services?
Have a great week!
Graham
