Why We Sleep Errors, Tom Cruise Getting Soaked, Remote Work and a T-Rex
Happy Wednesday !
I hope you're having a great week! Here are some things I've been checking out and working on the last week:
Blog Post I Wrote: What is Cognitive Bias?
This is an introductory post to cognitive bias, which will become part of a longer series on cognitive biases and mental models. These two topics are responsible for the greatest increase in the level of my thinking over the past several years, and I'll be investing a lot of time in writing about them, both for myself (writing is one of the best ways to learn), and to share with others. Enjoy!
Articles I'm Reading:
Matthew Walker's "Why We Sleep" Is Riddled with Scientific and Factual Errors - Alexey Guzey - I read and recommended Why We Sleep, so I'm disappointed to see this. The reality is that this is another good example of an area where the answers aren't black and white, and you must be aware when someone is making an argument one way or another. That said, I think more attention to our sleep (and more sleep in general) is a good thing. Like consuming meat, the answer may be to go back to basics; for sleep, try and eliminate unnatural factors in your sleep environment, sleep without an alarm when possible, etc. Antifragile is a great book to read if you want more guidance on operating under uncertainty (or unclear information).
Defiant Dave Chappelle - National Review - I avoid politics, but I'll file this under 'cultural'. If you've watched Chappelle's latest comedy special, you may have some thoughts, but what I find most interesting here is the disconnect between critics and audience. We seem to be seeing disconnects like this more and more between the popular narrative and the popular opinion, and personally I'm much more wary of accepting the narrative within my own bubble.
How Morning Brew's referral program built an audience of 1.5 million subscribers - Tyler Denk - For the marketers and entrepreneurs out there, this is a super-tactical post about referral programs. One of the best I've ever read (and I've read a lot).
Tom Cruise getting water thrown on him - Love or hate Tom Cruise, his reaction to this is worth noting. It's calm, direct and clear. I've thought quite a bit about how to better handle conflict; one of the reasons I don't think we are good is that we don't get much practice. Celebrities probably have to practice regularly (paparazzi, fans, etc.).
The most amazing remote work setup - This thread breaks down an awesome remote work setup...I could easily see myself using something like this in the future while working/living somewhere more remote (rural Nova Scotia?).
For a good laugh - A fun break from regularly scheduled programming...I feel bad for the guy who lost his food.
Have a great week!
Graham
