Asia's El Chapo, Inequality, Bike Lanes & Surfing

Happy Wednesday !

I hope you're having a great week! It was a busy week last week, hence the hiatus, but I spent the weekend back in Nova Scotia and got some time to read, so there is a lot to digest this week.

If you're Canadian, I hope you enjoyed Thanksgiving this past weekend, and aren't too swamped by the short week.

If you still haven't filled out the 2-minute survey about this newsletter and what you enjoy most about it - please do! It will help me improve this moving forward.

Without further ado...

Articles I'm Reading:

The Hunt for Asia's El Chapo - Reuters - Turns out the man believed to be behind one of (if not the) largest drug empire in the world is a China-born Canadian. Forging alliances between triads and organized crime across Asia, the empire is believed to be bringing in at least $17B per year (!!).

The Life-Changing Magic of Having Enough - Ryan Holiday - I'm currently reading Holiday's latest book, Stillness is the Key (thanks Dave!), but this article hit home too, encapsulating a lot of what I think about on the balance between ambition and happiness (explored further in the book).

Too Much Inequality - Albert Wenger - A 2-minute read on the negative effects of extreme inequality in wealth and social media.

New Pouch Cells Could be Good for 1 Million Miles - CleanTechnica - I'll take any opportunity I can to brag about Nova Scotia; this is a potential breakthrough in battery technology, with implications for lifetime of electric cars.

The latest evidence that bike lanes are good for business - Eric Jaffe (paywall) - Study in Toronto finds that replacing parking with bike lanes has a positive impact on local businesses.

The surfer's secret to happiness - Ellis Avery - On my mind after surfing all weekend, this meditation on happiness conveys a bit of why I (and so many others) enjoy it so much.

Photo from the week: I got out surfing several times this weekend in Nova Scotia. One of the most special parts about surfing on the South Shore is 1) it's usually not busy (often 1-2 others, who you know) and 2) when it is busy, everyone is friendly and supportive, which in surfing can be rare.

This particular photo was taken at Cherry Hill Beach Monday morning around 9am.

Have a great week!

Graham
