Uber, Overnight Millionaires, Brad Pitt, and the End of Aging
Happy Wednesday !
I have an ask this week. I'm trying to continue improving the newsletter, and I want to know more about what you'd like to see.
If you could fill out this 5-question survey, it would be a great help! Thanks in advance.
Now back to our regular programming.
Book I Read This Week: Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber
A fascinating book about the turbulent growth of Uber, and in particular the rise and fall of its former CEO, Travis Kalanick. In many ways, a lesson in what not to do in a hyper-growth startup, what is perhaps most interesting is Kalanick himself. Driven to the extreme, his lack of self-awareness was ultimately his downfall. Perhaps he should have absorbed some of Ryan Holiday's books (below).
Articles I'm Reading:
What Really Happens When You Become an Overnight Millionaire - Marker - A look inside Peter Rahal's life after selling RxBar for $600M to Kellogg's.
Brad Pitt is Still Searching - GQ - A recent profile of Brad Pitt, a relatively elusive figure these days.
First hint that body’s ‘biological age’ can be reversed - Nature - Some limited studies of drugs that have proven helpful for life extension in rats get human tested, and show improvement in aging.
Inside Bill's Brain Calls BS on Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers Theory - Wired - I started watching this Netflix documentary, but having read Malcolm Gladwell's stuff, it's interesting to see his supposed rules disputed. Not the first time I've seen it either.
Book I'll Be Reading Soon: Stillness is the Key - Ryan Holiday
Ryan Holiday has written books like The Obstacle is the Way and Ego is the Enemy, focused on applications of Stoicism and philosophy to everyday life. I'm looking forward to his latest book, and should have book notes up in a couple weeks.
Have a great week!
Graham
