Travel Rules, Why Books Don't Work, Dying for Photos, Jim Carrey & Tech Profiles
Happy Wednesday !
I hope you're having a great week! Here are some things I've been checking out and working on the last week:
Blog Post I Wrote: 20 Rules to Make Travel Better (For You and Others)
Having traveled a lot in the last few years, I have some strong opinions on this subject. Most are common sense, but travel would be a lot better if more of us respected the rules.
Articles I'm Reading:
Why Books Don't Work - Andy Matuschak - An exploration of why books aren't ideal from a learning perspective, and how we could do it better.
Comedy in the ’90s, Part 2: The Year Jim Carrey Arrived - The Ringer - Fun (and a little crazy) history of Jim Carrey's ascent to the top of Hollywood in the 90s. A preview: his price for one movie went from $400K to $7M in a matter of weeks.
Robert Landsburg's Brave Final Shots - Huckberry - This photographer got caught too close to Mt. St. Helen's eruption, and upon realizing this, took photos until the last minute, and then shielded his camera with his body so the shots could be preserved. Unreal.
The Most Measured Person in Tech Is Running the Most Chaotic Place on the Internet - NYT - Profile of Susan Wojcicki, the CEO of YouTube, and a long-time friend of the Google founders.
Zoom, Zoom, Zoom! The Exclusive Inside Story Of The New Billionaire Behind Tech’s Hottest IPO - Forbes - A look at Eric Yuan, the CEO of Zoom, which went public recently.
Product I Finally Ordered: WHOOP Band
I've mentioned this product before, and finally ordered one after watching how friends use theirs. Some of my desired insights:
What my "ideal" day looks like in terms of sleep and activity.
See how various factors affect my sleep (activity, meal timing, alcohol, sleep environment).
Calibrate my own assessment of my recovery/rest state (relevant for critical thinking and performance at work).
Have a measurable assessment of my fitness over time, and which activities improve this most.
If you're thinking of getting one, and would like a $30 off code, let me know.
Photos from the week:
I had the pleasure of attending a lunch put on by Ardbeg, where we got to try some of their current and upcoming products. A lot of fun to chat with some of their ambassadors, who grew up around the distillery and have been developing their whisky. Ardbeg is a new favorite.
We just got scooters in Montreal, and while I'm in favour - I think encouraging micro-mobility is great for cities - there's always these people...
Have a great week!
Graham
