Decision Making, The Good Life, Aircraft Carriers and Must-Reads
I hope you're having a great week! It's finally warming up here in Montreal, which I celebrated by going for a bike ride Saturday, before it promptly returned to below freezing that night.
It's also been a big week for sports fans: Tiger back on top, and one of the biggest upsets in NHL history.
Here are some things I've been checking out and working on the last week:
Blog Post I Wrote:Patrick Collison on Decision Making
I've been reading a lot about decision making. When I heard two podcasts featuring Patrick, I knew I had to write about his decision making framework. It's simple, yet powerful.
Book Notes I Added:The Art of the Good Life - Rolf Dobelli
52 principles for living a great life, based on modern psychology, Stoicism and investment theory. You can also find notes for Rolf's other book, The Art of Thinking Clearly, here. I recommend both.
Articles I'm Reading:
- The Epic Hunt for a Lost WWII Aircraft Carrier - New York Times - A fun read about ocean exploration. If you don't want to read the full thing, at least check out the side-scan sonar image of the carrier on the ocean floor. Very cool.
- Translated Interview with Peter Thiel - This rare interview with Thiel is translated from German. A known contrarian (before it became "cool"), this interview is fascinating. Among the controversial takeaways: Stoicism breeds complacency.
- Mr. Rogers Had a Simple Set of Rules for Talking to Children - The Atlantic - Some insight into the attention to detail of a master at his craft.
- The Third Phase of Clean Energy Will Be the Most Disruptive Yet - Ramez Naam - The renewables analysis continues, with this piece suggesting renewables will soon be cheaper than existing oil and gas powerplants (as opposed to cheaper than building new plants).
- On Pivoting as a Funded Startup Founder - Ryan Caldbeck (Twitter) - A brutal, painful look at what startup founders (particularly those with VC funding) go through when building their companies, even when perceived as successes.
- The Must-Read List - David Perell (Twitter) - Great list of writers of various types. I know of and support many of the selections, and will be checking out the others.
Album I'm Listening To: Ventura - Anderson .Paak
New hip-hop album out this week from Anderson .Paak. Jet Black is an early favourite.
Have a great week!
Graham
