Top Books, Decision-Making, Renewables Rising, & Time-Tracking
Happy Wednesday !
I hope you're having a great week.
I spent an unusual amount of time reading about decision-making and writing last week, so that's a heavy theme in this week's newsletter.
As usual, however, there's still a variety of topics. Enjoy!
Blog Post I Wrote: The Top 10 Books I Read in 2018
A little slow getting this post together, but it's always good to let books sit for a while before judging their worth. These are the 10 books which had the largest impact on me in 2018.
Book Notes I Added: Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman
Kahneman won the Nobel prize for much of the work discussed here, and it's considered a modern classic in psychology and economics. His work has exposed and challenged many of the previous assumptions about how humans make decisions and think.
Articles I'm Reading:
The Decision Matrix: How to Prioritize What Matters - Farnam Street - One of the most useful articles I read about decision-making. It provides a simple framework for where to spend your time when making decisions.
Riding the Writing Wave - David Perell - A great summary of both why and how you should write.
Writing, Briefly - Paul Graham - A quick list of tips to improve your writing.
Here’s how the footprint of the plant-based Impossible Burger compares to beef - Fast Company - Burger King debuted their plant-based burger in limited test locations, and this is a good breakdown of just how much better for the environment it is. Related to the article I wrote last week about the quick math behind meat consumption.
More stunning falls in solar and battery storage costs put fossil fuels on notice - Renew Economy - Highlights: the cost of lithium-ion battery storage has dropped 35% since early 2018, wind and solar have dropped 10% and 18% respectively.
Product I'm Eyeing: Timeular
Very cool implementation of a physical product that is linked to digital. This is a multi-sided die that you physically turn to a different side to track different activities, which are then summarized in a dashboard. Debating whether it's better than something like RescueTime. Certainly more flexible for non-digital activities.
Song I'm Listening To: Emily - Tourist
This week's addition to my Flow playlist (the primary playlist I listen to when I work).
Have a great week!
Graham
