Smart Glasses, Mammoths and Navy SEAL Leadership
Happy Wednesday !
I hope you're having a great week. Here are some things I've been checking out and working on the last week:
Blog Post I Wrote: Time Not Money
I walked past some beautiful supercars the other day, and for the first time I can remember, realized I didn't want to own them. Here's why I think that is.
Articles I'm Reading:
North is Thalmic's Secret Smart Glasses Play - Betakit: Thalmic Labs is a Canadian wearables company, and it looks like they're about to debut a set of smart glasses in the near future. Big play for a Canadian company that should be interesting.
Exclusive: WhatsApp Cofounder Brian Acton Gives The Inside Story On #DeleteFacebook And Why He Left $850 Million Behind - Forbes: The data/Facebook/modern social media debate is a complex one, but this is one of the few articles on the topic I find interesting, partially because the main character had such an inside view of the issue.
The Ultimate Learning Guide via Shane Parrish: Shane Parrish runs Farnam Street, one of my favourite blogs about learning (which I recently found out is headquartered in Ottawa!). This is a third-party roundup of a bunch of his articles.
Taming the Mammoth: Why You Should Stop Caring What Other People Think - Tim Urban/Wait but Why: I should really just re-read the Wait but Why blog continuously - it's that good. This article is about ignoring what other people think, and is a good one to keep re-reading when needed.
Book I'm Reading: The Dichotomy of Leadership - Jocko Willink & Leif Babin
A follow up to Extreme Ownership (my book notes here), this book is about the tough balance a leader must walk in their duties, with anecdotes from both Jocko and Leif's time in Iraq as Navy SEALs, and their experience consulting in the business world. More nuanced than Extreme Ownership, the two books make a good pair.
Have a great week!
Graham
