Weekly Mix #242 - Time, Subtraction, Planning Life, Bikepacking & Affirmations
Time, Subtraction, Planning Life, Bikepacking & Affirmations
Happy Monday!
Most people I speak with agree that the past two years have been a blur.
We've joked that whenever you're estimating when something in the past happened, you should just add two years to the guess.
I was reading How to Live this week when I stumbled on an explanation:
"You recently had a day, or even a month, that you can’t remember.
If I asked what you did then, you couldn’t say.
There was nothing unusual about it.
What if you have many more of those?
What if, when you’re older, you can’t recall entire years?...
When you get older, time flies by, forgotten, because you’re not having as many new experiences."
We mark time with significant events. Trips, graduations, new jobs, new relationships.
During the pandemic, most of those things were put on hold. So we had no way to mark the time.
What's the answer? Plan big events. Have parties, travel, visit friends, change jobs.
More events = more ways to mark the time.
Have a great week.

📖 From Designing a House to Editing Text, Sometimes Less Is More - Scientific American - "Less is more" has become somewhat of a mantra for me, and my interest in home design has grown the last few years too. This article combines the two, and uses the example of a home built in a tough climate to illustrate why subtraction is so important.
📖 Your Life Journey Exercise - Ray Dalio - Something that took me a long time to realize is that it's very hard to learn and absorb something once. We need to be reminded consistently. This piece is typical Dalio style—logical and to the point—and reminds us that most humans follow a similar life pattern. But most of us don't think about our lives and future clearly, and therefore fail to plan for them too.
📖 5.4kg Bikepacking Gear List - My interest in bikepacking has been growing, and this list from @une_olive (Instagram) is a great ultralight setup, coming in at just 5.4kg. Whenever I do purchase gear, it will look something like this.
🎧 [HOUSE OF SPOILS] Spoils Radio - A great playlist to work to, or to put on for some ambient music in the background.
