Weekly Mix #241 - How to Live, Life-Changing Quotes, Things Money Can't Buy & The Defiant Ones
How to Live, Life-Changing Quotes, Things Money Can't Buy & The Defiant Ones
Happy Monday!
I missed the newsletter last week: I didn't make the time.
It was a conscious choice; there were other things I had to do.
When summer comes around, there always seems to be a much larger number of possible ways to spend my time, and because of the long winters here in Montreal, I always want to make the most of summer.
It reminded me that over at Farnam Street, Shane Parrish and his team take the time to do exactly that: take a break from work and enjoy the summer.
I often wonder if our lives shouldn't be structured similarly, especially for those of us that live in a highly variable climate.
Winter is great for work. Summer is great for play.
So why would we think it makes sense to keep the same balance?
I won't be taking time completely off. And I'll still be doing the newsletter.
But I will be making the most of all the summer opportunities that I can.
I hope you get to do the same!
Have a great week.
Graham

📚 Book: How to Live - Derek Sivers - Derek's books are always fun and thought-provoking. This one is no different: each chapter is about a philosophy of how to life, but each chapter disagrees with the next. It's designed to make you ask the questions, not give you the answers.
📖 43 Life-Changing Quotes From the World's Most Powerful People - Polina Pompliano - The Profile - The Profile is one of my favourite newsletters—and a source of many of the articles I share here. This collection of quotes covers everything from rationality to relationships to curiosity.
📖 What Money Can't Buy - Jack Raines - Young Money - Another list, this time of 87 things that money can't buy:
Good healthy
Novelty
A scratch golf game
A sense of fulfillment in your work
Some things that money can buy:
The freedom and flexibility to pursue the things that it can't buy.
🍿 The Defiant Ones - Netflix - I love biographies in general, but I've really been enjoying those studying figures in industries like music and hip hop lately. Part of it is the recency of the development of the culture; rap and hip hop have only been around since the 70s. The other part is the combination of hustle—business acumen and drive—and creativity. Many are both artists and entrepreneurs, and often made their way from very little. This chronicles the rise of both Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine through their music careers, to the sale of Beats to Apple for $3.2B in 2014.
