Weekly Mix #219 - Book Recommendations, Fear, Career Trends & Being Successful
Book Recommendations, Fear, Career Trends & Being Successful
Happy Monday!
I missed last week after some travel complications led to me being stuck just on the other side of the US border for a stressful 24 hours.
It's said that travel is a good test of relationships, and I've often thought of it as a good opportunity to practice techniques for dealing with stress.
Travel complications are stressful in large part because of the unknown. Waiting for COVID tests, or a flight change, or trying to get through to customer service—you don't know what the outcome will be or when it will happen.
Conflicts with travel partners are always an unknown too. Some things are a big deal to other people, but a small deal for you. Sometimes it's the opposite.
Some of the things that help me when I'm in situations like this:
Repeating a mantra like "focus on what you can control."
Visualizing what I'll think about this in a week, a month, a year.
Thinking about myself from the perspective of a third-party observer: how would I want them to see me act?
Meditating.
Going for a walk.
Finding and focusing on the benefits of the situation: time to read, write, go for a walk, listen to a podcast, spend more time with the people I'm with, etc.
If you have holiday travels planned, I hope they're smooth.
And if they aren't, I hope they're an opportunity to practice something useful!
