Weekly Mix #195 - The Inner Game, Decision-Making Speed, The Fun Scale & Small Spaces

Happy Monday Tuesday! (again)

The past week has been a busy one for me.

I did almost zero work this weekend, and when that happens (though it's nice), I feel like I start the week on the back foot, which is tough.

This week I thought a lot about decision-making.

Specifically, decision speed.

Decision speed is the forgotten child of good decision-making.

There are all kinds of resources out there that are aimed at making better decisions. Academics study it, organizations try to value it, and ultimately, lots of people are rewarded for it.

But the reality is that most of us have to make a few big decisions a year, but we make hundreds of tiny decisions every week.

What to eat, what to do, what to wear, what to work on: these decisions have consequences long-term because they compound, but day-to-day they have little consequence.

Instead of trying to make every decision perfect, we should try and make faster decisions that are good enough.

Choosing one of the things on the menu that appeals to us, instead of agonizing over choosing the best one.

Removing decisions where we can, like wearing the same thing each day, or reducing the number of options available.

We should know how to make good decisions when we need to.

But spend some time trying to increase your decision speed.

You'll be surprised at how often it's possible.

A good way to filter your self-talk: if someone else said this to you, what would your reaction be?

If it's not good, you might want to stop.

📚 Book Notes: The Inner Game of Golf by Timothy Gallwey

The Inner Game of Tennis is the best book I've read on using mental performance to improve a physical skill. The Inner Game of Golf was a pleasant surprise, following the author's exploration of using the same principles to improve his golf game. Genuine and immediately applicable.

📖 The Internet of Landlords Makes Renters of Us All - The Reboot - This article is a little more pessimistic than my personal outlook, but it forms a good mental model for us to think about where we're paying rent, and where we might find a way to become landlords ourselves instead.

📖 The Fun Scale - Jesse Evers - My brother told me about this fun scale in relation to long-distance cycling races, and it popped up in another newsletter of mine this week. There are 3 types of fun, and only type 1 is what you typically think of.

📷 Clovelly Apartment - James Garvan - Small living spaces have become a bit of a fascination for me, and this is one of the most beautiful small apartments I've seen. It's easy to forget how much light, textures, and clutter can affect our peace of mind (or help it).
