New York, Nicolas Cage, WeWork and Truth
Happy Wednesday !
I hope you're having a great week. As I'm sure you know, today is 9/11, the anniversary of the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001. Having spent a little bit of time living in New York, I can only imagine what it was like at the time. That said, I think the following piece (published November 11, 2001) gives a brief insight into what it was (and is) like for those closest.
The Way We Live Now: 11-11-01; Lost and Found - Colson Whitehead, NYT
Blog Post I Wrote: You Must Tell Yourself the Truth
This post talks about why it's important to seek an accurate picture of the world, through the lens of casual golf (it makes more sense if you read it).
Articles I'm Reading:
Nicolas Cage on his legacy, his philosophy of acting and his metaphorical — and literal — search for the Holy Grail. - NYT - If you know Nicolas Cage at all (and his recent work), you know this interview can only be entertaining.
The WeWork IPO - Stratechery - The WeWork IPO filing has been fascinating, and made only more dramatic by them halving their proposed valuation partway through the process. This is a good breakdown of the business for those interested.
OuiWork? The quick case for WeWork as an actually disruptive business - Alex Danco - Another look at WeWork, this time a bit less formally, but no less interesting.
Starbucks, monetary superpower - Moneyness - I'd always thought gift cards must be a great deal for companies, given how many I forget to spend (apparently called 'breakage'). Turns out, it also functions as a free loan for companies, and is extremely efficient for companies like Starbucks who have some $1.6B (!!) from gift cards.
The business of sleep - British GQ - A fascinating look at a sleep guru in the UK, and his work with top Premier League teams, among others, to improve performance via sleep.
Burning the Boats: Going All-In on a Side Project - Tommy Griffith - A cool look (including financials) at the path of someone who left a secure job to build out a content and software business full-time.
Photos from this week: Montreal is known as a biking city, and Monday I explored some of the bike paths, and the F1 track, on an absolutely beautiful evening.
Have a great week!
Graham
