Alive Time, Life Advice, Costa Rica & Facebook Dying
I hope you've had a great couple weeks.
There was no newsletter last week as I was in Costa Rica on a surf trip with my brother and I enjoyed being offline most of the week.
I got a lot of reading done as a result, and will be adding notes from those books in the coming weeks.
In the meantime, here's some of the best stuff from the last couple weeks - enjoy!
Book Notes I Added:The Boron Letters - Gary Halbert
I've been reading about how to improve my writing, and this copywriting book is a classic. Lots of good tidbits, and written in a style that's very easy to read (letters to his son while in prison).
Articles I'm Reading:
- Will You Choose Alive Time or Dead Time? - Ryan Holiday - "Alive time or dead time?" is one of my favorite reminders. I thought about it a lot while on my trip, particularly during long layovers, waits for ferries, etc. There's a lot of time in a day if you're ready to make the most of it (reading is a great way).
- The Best Advice You've Ever Received - David Pogue - A crowdsourced list of life advice with some gems.
- The Fruits of Friendship - David Perell - I thought a lot about friendship while away too. It struck me how quickly we form deep friendships while traveling, largely due to the context (looking for friends, sharing experiences, exploring, etc.). This piece resonated with me as a result.
- Facebook is Dying, Wall Street Just Doesn't Realize it Yet - Lou Kerner - I know this holds true for me, and I'm hearing similar things from my own peer group and those of similar ages. The next 18-24 months should be interesting.
Book I'm Reading:Demian - Hermann HesseSiddharthais already one of my favorite novels, and I enjoyed Demian just as much. A timeless coming-of-age story that struck a chord with me, despite being first published in 1919. Also fantastic writing.
Song I'm Listening To: Vertigo - Housefly & BECCA
I've linked songs from BECCA before, who has an amazing voice, and I saw her perform with Housefly recently and was blown away. This song is good, but if you want a sense of just how talented Housefly is, head over to their Instagram.
