Shopify Goes Full Remote, The War of Art, Ideas & Pirates

Happy Friday !
I hope you're having a great week! Another week of remote work and another big tech company has embraced it long-term.

Shopify CEO Tobi Lutke announced that Shopify would be moving to become a "digital by default company".

Perhaps the most interesting is this tweet in the thread:

"This means that the work experience should be the same for everyone who works together at Shopify no matter where they are working from. Everyone will be in their own tile during meetings and we will use the best digital communications tools to work together."

Which goes with this:

"The future of the office is to act as an on-ramp to the same digital workplace that you can access from your #WFH setup."

In other words, Shopify will be reworking their offices to become alternate spaces to do remote work. In this scenario, the office is just another place you can work from, the same as your home.

This makes sense for companies going full remote–many people like "going to work" or having a separate workspace from their home (and potentially their kids).

But the painful part of remote work is when you have a hybrid; some people are in-person at the office, while some are remote. Great conference room setups help this, but perhaps even easier is just to simulate being home, even while you're at work.

It will be interesting to see if other companies adopt this model, instead of going completely remote. I think there's appetite for it; time will tell how much.

Blog Post I Wrote: The Four Things You Need for a Great Remote Work Setup

I probably should have written this a couple months ago, but after working remote for most of the last several years, and moving to three different spots to work remotely in the last two months, these are all my requirements for a great remote work setup. The details matter with remote work, and the improvements compound when you have big group calls.

Book Notes I Added: The War of Art - Steven Pressfield

I've had this book on my list for a long time, and I should have found the time. It was a quick read (~2 hours), and very motivating. I've now got "Resistance is the enemy" above my work station. You'll get it once you read it. For anyone who struggles with any creative or business endeavour, and needs some motivation (so, pretty much anyone).

Articles I'm Reading:

Seth Godin's Top 100 Posts - Seth writes about marketing and creativity, and writes on his blog every day (I subscribe to get his posts via email). He is a master at writing short posts, and his top 100 are great examples to use to improve your writing.

50 Ideas That Changed My Life - David Perell - Lots of great concepts and ideas in here that can serve as a jumping-off point to dig further.

30 Architects' Private Homes - Dwell - Continuing the architecture theme, here are 30 stunning homes of very different types, built to live in by the architects themselves.

The Day the Pirates Came - BBC - I found this story fascinating–it tells the story of an Indian sailor being kidnapped off the coast of West Africa, which is apparently now the piracy centre of the world (not Somalia, as it was a decade ago).

YouTube Channel for Parents: The Kids Are in Charge

For the parents with kids to entertain, this YouTube channel is from Farnam Street, one of my favourite blogs, and features 1-2 hour segments from smart people in all kinds of domains, aimed at kids 10-14.

Products I'm Watching: Aer

Aer makes some of my favourite bags, and one of their only yearly sales is on now for Memorial Day weekend. Awesome bags for work, the gym, and travel.

Have a great week!

Graham
