Illustration, Inspiration & The Growth of Cities

Happy Saturday !
I hope you're having a great week! The last week seemed to be the real start of summer, so I hope you're all going to get outside and enjoy some sunshine.

I spent a significant portion of time moving my website from Squarespace to Webflow over the past couple weeks, and you're welcome to check out the new site here. There are no major changes in appearance (yet), but it should be much faster.

Here are some things I've been checking out over the last week:

What I'm Watching: 8:46 - Dave Chappelle

Comedian Dave Chappelle did a quick set at a recent open-air event where he talks about the murder of George Floyd and the recent protests against systemic racism. A powerful piece.

Things I'm Viewing:

Roman Muradov - Art direction & illustration for Notion - I've been using Notion for about eight months now, and one of their consistent brand features is their quirky illustrations. This is the guy behind it, and his work is beautiful.

The Growth of Cities - This comes from David Perell's newsletter, which I would highly recommend, and shows that there were actually more cities in Canada which grew by more than 10,000 people last year:

Tweet I'm Thinking About: Inspiration is perishable: this is something I've experienced frequently, but I all-too-often forget to follow the rule.

Inspiration is perishable.

Strike while the flame is hot. Don’t wait. The candle of inspiration will help you push through the challenges of creating something.

Book I'm Reading: The Great Mental Models, Volume 2

Farnam Street is a blog about thinking better, and it's one of my favourites. They've released their second book about mental models. Available in both audiobook and hardcover.

Product I'm Looking At: Candela Seven Electric Hydrofoil

I've always wondered why hydrofoils didn't take off long-term (they were bigger in the 50s/60s), but they're impractical for a variety of reasons. The resurgence of electric has brought them back, and I can't wait until they're more widely available.

Set I'm Listening To: Paul Kalkbrenner in Buenos Aires

Some more electronic/techno music this week. This has been my favourite set for the past couple weeks while powering through work. Kalkbrenner apparently mixes the different sounds live, so is considered a live performer, rather than a DJ.

Have a great week!

Graham
