Remote Work Tips, Michael Jordan & Atlantic Canada
Happy Thursday !
It was a sad week here in Nova Scotia with the mass shooting. Part of the reason it's so shocking is the peaceful, kind nature of the people here. I'm optimistic that those same qualities will mean there will be lots of support for those who need it in the recovery.
An article was published this week based on a conversation I had with Andrew MacDonald, a local journalist, and it touches upon some interesting questions I think a lot about, like leaving and returning to Nova Scotia. While the article is pretty focused on my situation and Nova Scotia, I think the same applies for any rural area that faces their younger generation leaving for larger cities and other opportunities.

Book Notes I Added: The Codfathers: Lessons from the Atlantic Business Elite
Keeping with the Atlantic Canada theme this week, I added notes from a 2005 book by Gordon Pitts profiling some of Atlantic Canada's top business personalities and families. A compelling read for those of us from Atlantic Canada.
One of the quotes that hit me the hardest, describing those of us from the Maritimes who head to larger cities like Toronto or Montreal:
"They don’t want to give up on the Maritimes, as so many Central Canadian critics have done. They believe that the Maritimes will return to the mythic past glory of the 19th century–and when it does, they will return for good. Like parts of the Prairies, this is Tomorrow Country, where tomorrow never seems to come."
Articles I'm Reading:
25 things we’ve implemented at Front to keep a great culture while being remote - Mathilde Collin - We're continuing to adjust and optimize our work while remote at Unito, and I enjoyed this guide from Front's CEO. Lots of actionable ideas if your company is remote.
Front's guide to successful remote work - Front Blog - This is a little different, and is more focused on working well while remote. My favorite heuristic from this guide: "Don't argue over chat. If you're having a long discussion, just hop on a Zoom call." Great rule.
Journey Through the Sahara - Jody MacDonald - A fun, short read, with beautiful photographs, of a trip through the Sahara on an iron ore train, in search of surf on the coast. This kind of trip always evokes some sort of nostalgia for what I imagine travel was like 100+ years ago.
This story also led me to learning more about the author, Jody MacDonald, who has an unbelievable bio–90 countries and counting, and a vast client list.
Series I'm Watching: The Last Dance
I'm not a big basketball fan, but I'm a sports fan, and this behind-the-scenes documentary about Michael Jordan is wildly entertaining. Perhaps given that I don't know much about basketball, it's even more interesting to learn about the 80s and 90s, and how Jordan and the Bulls were viewed. That said, these kinds of behind-the-scenes sports documentaries are entertaining for any sports fan. Can view on Netflix in Canada.
Photos From This Week: I tried to make the most of this weekend, which was a beautiful one here in Nova Scotia. Paddleboarding required cracking through some ice, but was worth it. Hope you're all staying safe wherever you are.
Have a great week!
Graham
