Silver Linings, Surveillance and Fitness at Home
Happy Thursday !
I hope you're having a great week! Here are some things I've been checking out and working on the last week:
Book Notes I Added: The Obstacle is the Way
This book is a fitting one for the times, and I'd highly recommend it given the challenges we're all facing. An introduction to Stoicism and how it applies in our lives, it will help you build courage and fortitude in times of uncertainty.
Articles I'm Reading:
Silver linings among COVID-19 - This Twitter thread highlights some of the benefits of reduced human activity in areas like Italy.
Glassblower Turned Billionaire is Betting Millions on His Crazy Idea to Save Journalism - Forbes - I've been making a point to investigate more interesting people when they come up in my reading, and Jim McKelvey is one of those people. Clearly very smart, he cofounded Square with Jack Dorsey, and is working on a new business to usher in a new wave of journalism...while still blowing glass.
Tesla “big battery” in Australia is becoming a bigger nightmare for fossil fuel power generators - Teslerati - I've posted a few times about the huge battery installation in Australia, but it's awesome to see that it's outperforming even their best expectations. They're planning to expand.
This Small Company Is Turning Utah Into a Surveillance Panopticon - Vice - Surveillance and privacy is a topic that no one really wants to think about, especially when the trade-off is convenience (myself included). That said, I'm planning to spend more time learning about the topic because giving private companies like these massive amounts of public data has to have negative consequences at some point.
Lift Weight, Not Too Much, Most of the Days - The Atlantic - This article is an overview of the "Grease the Groove" technique. Essentially, you do a small number of reps throughout the day. We've been playing pushup (and pullup) tag on our company chat, with this being the underlying principle. I'd encourage all of you stuck at home to try!
Book I Just Finished: A Gentleman in Moscow - Amor Towles
I've been reading more than ever with more time at home, and I've been splitting between fiction and non-fiction. This novel is set in early 20th century Russia and follows a member of the aristocracy sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol hotel in Moscow. Great writing and a wonderful read.
Have a great week! Stay safe (and keep your distance).
Graham
